A recent study sought to determine the efficacy of light therapy for treating painful syndrome, a form of depression characterized by significant pain. The study found that light therapy was not significantly more effective than placebo in reducing pain symptoms.

The study participants were randomized to one of three groups: light therapy, placebo light therapy, or no treatment. 

Participants in the light therapy and placebo light therapy groups were exposed to bright white light for 30 minutes each day, five days per week, for four weeks. The no-treatment group did not receive any intervention.

At the end of the four-week intervention period, participants in the light therapy group reported a decrease in pain severity of 3.

Light therapy is a viable treatment for sad syndrome. It is an effective intervention for people with seasonal affective disorder (SAD). 

The guidelines for using light therapy are as follows: 

1. Use a light box that emits at least 10,000 lux of light.

2. Sit in front of the light box for 30 minutes daily, typically in the morning.

3. Make sure to have adequate exposure to natural sunlight as well.

Light therapy has a few potential side effects, including headaches, eye strain, and nausea. Some people may also experience agitation or anxiety.
